Kerala Monsoon 2026: State Sets New Standard for Disaster Preparedness

By Mallu Metro Kerala Desk | June 2026

Kerala’s monsoon season opened in the first week of June with heavy rainfall across all 14 districts. Unlike previous years when early monsoon flooding caught the state unprepared, the 2026 season has begun with the most comprehensive preparedness framework the state has ever deployed.

The RAINS (Real-time Alerts and Information System) app, developed in partnership with IMD and ISRO, now provides district-level rainfall predictions with 6-hour granularity. Over 1.2 million Kerala residents have downloaded the app since its 2025 launch, making it one of India’s most-used disaster preparedness tools.

The state disaster management authority has pre-positioned relief materials in 150 locations across flood-prone districts, established 2,800 relief camps with a combined capacity of 500,000 people, and trained 15,000 community volunteers in first response and evacuation procedures.

For NRIs with family in Kerala, the RAINS app and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority website provide real-time updates. Community WhatsApp groups coordinated by district collectors are another reliable information channel during emergencies.
