Kochi, Kerala – May 29, 2025
As monsoon intensifies across Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for eight districts, including Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki, Malappuram, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Palakkad. The alert follows days of torrential rains, leading to localized flooding, landslides, and widespread disruption in the state.
🚨 Districts Under Red Alert
The IMD, in its latest bulletin, confirmed that extremely heavy rainfall (above 204.5 mm) is expected in parts of the state through the week. This has prompted state authorities to enforce emergency preparedness measures across vulnerable areas.
🏫 Schools Closed in Six Districts
In response to safety concerns, district administrations have declared a holiday for all educational institutions—including schools, colleges, and training centers—in the following districts:
- Idukki
- Ernakulam
- Kannur
- Kasaragod
- Pathanamthitta
- Wayanad
Parents are urged to keep children indoors and follow updates from local authorities.
🌲 Landslides and Infrastructure Challenges
Several areas in hilly terrains such as Wayanad and Idukki have reported minor landslides, disrupting road networks and raising concerns about slope stability. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged residents to avoid travel in high-risk zones and monitor alerts via the “Monsoon Disaster Risk Map” released last week.
📱 What Authorities Are Saying
A senior IMD official told The Economic Times:
“This red alert indicates a very high likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall and flooding. We’re working closely with disaster response teams and the state government.”
The Chief Minister’s Office has directed district collectors to coordinate with local bodies and ensure temporary shelters and medical aid are accessible.
