Thiruvananthapuram | May 29, 2025 β In response to torrential monsoon rains and rising flood risks, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has suspended electricity supply in several flood-prone areas as a precautionary safety measure.
This critical move follows red alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for multiple districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode. The suspension aims to prevent electrocution hazards and infrastructure damage as water levels surge.
πΊ 3 Million Affected, 12,000+ Poles Damaged
Over the last 48 hours, more than 12,000 electricity poles and 48 transformers have been damaged across 25 electrical circles in Kerala, leaving approximately 3 million consumers without power. Restoration efforts are underway, with KSEB deploying emergency response teams to restore power where safe.
“We have taken this decision purely based on public safety. Power will be restored gradually once the water levels recede and the infrastructure is deemed safe,” said a KSEB official.
π Public Safety Advisory
KSEB and local authorities urge residents to:
- Avoid wading through floodwaters, especially near electrical poles.
- Do not use electrical appliances during outages.
- Report broken power lines immediately to local KSEB offices.
π Impact Across Kerala
The suspension of power has had a ripple effect across daily life, halting small businesses, disrupting transportation hubs, and affecting hospitals and schools. Mobile towers and internet services in some rural regions have also been hit.
KSEB is working closely with the Disaster Management Authority and local bodies to ensure coordinated relief efforts and rapid recovery.
