Passengers connecting through Zayed International Airport can now turn their journey into a short stay in Al Ain, after Etihad Airways and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi expanded the airline’s complimentary stopover programme beyond Abu Dhabi city.
Eligible Etihad passengers can choose up to two complimentary hotel nights in either Abu Dhabi or Al Ain, giving travelers two quite different ways to experience the emirate during a longer connection. Etihad Global
For India–Gulf and longer international journeys, the expansion is particularly relevant: Etihad says India is among the programme’s largest source markets. Etihad Global
What has changed?
Until now, the stopover programme was centered on Abu Dhabi city and its surrounding attractions.
The new option allows eligible travelers to choose Al Ain, the emirate’s inland Garden City, instead.
The two experiences are deliberately different.
Abu Dhabi offers beaches, museums, Yas Island attractions and the urban capital experience.
Al Ain offers a slower itinerary built around heritage, mountains, oases and nature, including:
- Al Ain Oasis;
- Jebel Hafeet;
- Al Jahili Fort;
- Qasr Al Muwaiji; and
- Al Ain Zoo. Etihad Global
Al Ain is also the Capital of Arab Tourism for 2026, giving the expansion additional significance this year. Media Office Abu Dhabi
How much of the stopover is actually free?
This is where travelers should read the word “free” carefully.
Etihad’s complimentary stopover package currently provides one or two nights of accommodation at selected three- and four-star hotels. Etihad Global
However, the standard free package is essentially room-only.
Breakfast, minibar, room service, laundry, extra beds and other incidental services are not included. Etihad’s terms also state that the AED15 tourism fee per room per night is payable separately. Etihad Global
So the useful interpretation is:
the hotel room can be complimentary — the entire stopover holiday is not.
Al Ain has one important extra: airport transfers
For passengers choosing Al Ain, Etihad provides a complimentary shuttle between Zayed International Airport and Al Ain city center. Etihad Global
That matters because Al Ain is a considerable distance from the airport.
Etihad says its scheduled coach journey takes around 2 hours 30 minutes, with two departures daily. The shuttle goes to Al Ain city center rather than directly to individual hotels and should be reserved at least 24 hours in advance. Etihad Global
Etihad estimates a taxi journey at approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Etihad Global
That travel time should be part of the decision.
Someone with only a short stopover may find Abu Dhabi city more practical, while a passenger with enough time who specifically wants heritage, nature and a quieter stay may find Al Ain worthwhile.
Who can use the complimentary stopover?
The current Etihad terms say the free package requires a stopover of at least 24 hours, with complimentary accommodation available for one or two nights, up to 48 hours. Etihad Global
The programme applies to qualifying Etihad-operated journeys, and hotel reservations must normally be made at least 72 hours before arrival. Hotel availability is not guaranteed. Etihad Global
Etihad’s detailed terms contain route and ticketing conditions, including limited exceptions for some one-way journeys, so travelers should check their specific booking rather than assuming eligibility from the length of the connection alone. Etihad Global
There are also blackout periods around some major Abu Dhabi events.
What about UAE visas?
A free hotel does not override UAE immigration requirements.
Travelers must either qualify for visa on arrival or obtain the appropriate UAE visa in advance. Etihad states that passengers remain responsible for ensuring they have the documentation required to enter the UAE. Etihad Global
For Indian passport holders in particular, eligibility for visa on arrival can depend on additional conditions, so this should be checked against the traveler’s own passport and residency/visa status before selecting a stopover.
Why this could be useful for Kerala travelers
For someone travelling from Kerala through Abu Dhabi towards Europe, North America or another destination, a 24–48 hour connection can sometimes become a short UAE visit rather than simply a long airport wait.
And this is not a marginal programme.
Etihad says more than 310,000 international visitors have used its Abu Dhabi Stopover programme since its 2024 launch, including approximately 60,000 during the first eight months of 2026. India is among its largest source markets. Etihad Global
The Al Ain option therefore adds a meaningful choice for passengers who may already know Abu Dhabi or Dubai and would prefer to experience a different part of the UAE.
There are a few additional benefits
Etihad stopover guests can also access the Abu Dhabi Stopover Pass, which provides discounts of up to 15% at selected attractions. Etihad Global
Eligible international Etihad passengers also currently receive complimentary medical travel insurance for visits of up to 15 days under a programme introduced with Daman. Etihad says the cover applies to qualifying tickets through December 2026, subject to its terms and conditions. Etihad Global
Before choosing Al Ain
The key question is not simply whether the hotel is free.
Consider:
How long is the stopover?
If you have only around 24 hours, account carefully for the journey between the airport and Al Ain.
What do you actually want to see?
Choose Abu Dhabi for the capital’s museums, beaches and attractions; consider Al Ain for heritage, Jebel Hafeet, the oasis and a quieter inland experience.
Does your ticket qualify?
Confirm eligibility directly against your Etihad booking.
Do you meet UAE entry requirements?
Check this before restructuring a journey around the stopover.
MalluMetro Take
The interesting part of this expansion is not simply the word “free.”
It is the choice.
A passenger connecting through Abu Dhabi can now turn the same airline journey into either a short capital-city break or a visit to a very different side of the emirate.
Al Ain will not make sense for every connection — particularly once the transfer time is considered.
But for someone with a full day or two available, the combination of a complimentary hotel and airport transfer makes it a genuine alternative rather than just another tourism promotion.
The best stopover is not necessarily the one with the most attractions. It is the one that fits the time you actually have.
