Kochi’s Pink Line is the metro extension the city’s IT workforce has been waiting for. The 11.2 km Phase 2 corridor connecting JLN Stadium to Infopark in Kakkanad is pushing toward its June 30 deadline for the first five stations, even after absorbing delays from last year’s heavy monsoon season and underground pipeline relocations.

What’s Being Built

The Pink Line adds 11 stations to Kochi’s metro network: Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Signal, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Kunnumpuram, Kakkanad Junction, Cochin Special Economic Zone (CSEZ), Chittethukara, Rajagiri, Infopark I, and Infopark II. Construction by Afcons Infrastructure is valued at Rs 1,141 crore.

KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera has confirmed a two-phase approach: the first five stations between Palarivattom and Padamugal are targeted for June 30, 2026, with the remaining stations expected by December 2026. The original 2025 completion deadline was revised to December 31, 2026.

Construction Progress

Piling work is approaching its final phase. Of the 2,027 piles planned, more than 1,450 have been completed, pushing progress close to 80%. Foundation and structural work has gained momentum after construction was expedited in early 2026 to compensate for monsoon-related setbacks.

Multimodal Integration

The Pink Line’s standout feature is its focus on connecting multiple transit modes. The alignment integrates with the city’s bus network, the internationally acclaimed Kochi Water Metro, and the public bicycle-sharing system. A traffic demand study is underway to determine whether Pink Line services will terminate at the JLN Stadium interchange or extend toward MG Road. If the extension proceeds, new rolling stock will be required.

Why This Matters for Malayalis

IT Professionals: Kakkanad is Kochi’s IT and administrative hub. Direct metro connectivity will transform the daily commute for thousands of tech workers, many of whom are Gulf-returnee families who settled in the Kochi metro area.

Property Values: Areas near the 11 new stations, particularly around Kakkanad Junction and CSEZ, are already seeing increased buyer interest. NRIs looking at Kochi investment property should watch these corridors closely.

Sustainability Model: Kochi Metro already meets 55% of its energy needs through solar power. The Pink Line extension reinforces its position as one of India’s most sustainable metro systems.
