Friday brunch in Dubai is an institution. For the Malayali community, though, the real weekend eating happens in places that do not appear on influencer lists and do not charge AED 400 for unlimited sparkling water.
Here is where to actually eat on a weekend if you are Malayali in Dubai and your standards were set by someone who knows what real food tastes like.
Calicut Paragon, Karama: The Kozhikode biryani here is the benchmark. It is not the fanciest restaurant in the area, but it is the one where you see the most families on a Friday afternoon, and that tells you everything you need to know.
Dhe Puttu, Al Nahda: Puttu and kadala in a restaurant setting that does not feel apologetic about serving traditional breakfast food for lunch. The pathiri and chicken curry combination is worth the drive from wherever you are.
Hotel Saravana Bhavan, multiple locations: Not Malayali specifically, but the Sunday morning dosa crowd at any Saravana Bhavan in Dubai is at least 40% Malayali and everyone knows it. The filter coffee alone justifies the visit.
Lulu Hypermarket food court, Al Barsha/Karama: This is the honest answer that nobody wants to admit. The Lulu food court biryanis and meals are reliably good, absurdly cheap, and surrounded by the comforting chaos of Malayali families doing their weekly shop. It is the closest you will get to eating in Kerala without getting on a plane.
If you have visitors from back home and want to show them where you actually eat (not where you eat when you are trying to impress someone), this list is your starting point.
