How to Survive Summer in the Gulf When You’re Used to Kerala’s Rain

June in Kerala: monsoon breaks, the air smells like wet earth and jasmine, you sit on the veranda with a cup of kattan kappi and watch the rain turn the world green. June in the Gulf: you open the car door and the handle burns your hand. The air hits your face like a hairdryer set to maximum. The walk from the parking lot to the mall entrance feels like a personal challenge from nature.

If you are newly arrived in the Gulf from Kerala, your body is genuinely confused. You grew up in 70-80% humidity with temperatures that rarely crossed 35 degrees. Now you are in 45-50 degree heat with humidity that makes the real-feel temperature even higher. Your body needs time to acclimatise, and you need to help it.

Hydration is not optional. Drink 3-4 litres of water daily minimum. Not tea (it is a mild diuretic), not soda (sugar does not help), not coffee (definitely not). Water. Add ORS sachets if you are sweating heavily. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already mildly dehydrated.

Dress for the climate, not for the office. Light colours, breathable fabrics, loose fitting clothes whenever you are not in a formal setting. Synthetic fabrics trap heat. Cotton and linen are your friends. A hat or umbrella for the walk between buildings is not excessive, it is sensible.

The car routine: Park in shade whenever possible. Use a windshield sun reflector. Open doors and windows for 30 seconds before sitting down. Never leave children, elderly people, or pets in a parked car, not even for two minutes. Interior temperatures can reach 70 degrees Celsius in direct sun.

The Kerala comparison that helps: Think of the Gulf summer the way you think of Kerala’s monsoon. You do not fight the monsoon. You adapt to it — you change your clothes, your food, your routine. Do the same with the Gulf heat. It is a season. It passes. And the Gulf winter, when it arrives in November, will feel like the best weather on earth because you earned it.
