Dubai’s metro network is about to grow significantly. The Blue Line, a 30 km expansion featuring 14 stations, moved from planning to visible construction when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inaugurated tunnel boring operations on May 3, 2026. For the large Malayali communities living in the areas this line will serve, this is the most consequential transport development in years.
Construction Status
The project is currently 20% complete, with over 10,000 workers and 500 engineers deployed across 12 active construction sites. More than 4.6 million work hours have been logged. Tunnelling is proceeding in three directions from International City 1 Station: toward Mirdif, Auto Market, and Al Warsan (International City 2). The AED 20.5 billion project is on track to reach 30% completion by end of 2026.
The line will span 15.5 km underground and 14.5 km above ground, with 9 elevated and 5 underground stations. The consortium of MAPA, Limak, and CRRC Hong Kong is executing the project.
Areas Served
The Blue Line will connect nine key areas to Dubai’s metro network for the first time: Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City 1 and 2, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai Festival City. It will offer a direct 20-minute journey to Dubai International Airport.
Critically, the Blue Line will serve as the link between the existing Red and Green lines, creating interchange points at Creek Station (Green Line) and Centrepoint Station (Red Line).
Gold Line Also Approved
In April 2026, Dubai also approved the Metro Gold Line, a 42 km, 18-station fully underground line. This signals that Dubai’s metro expansion is entering an ambitious new era, though the Gold Line is further from construction than the Blue Line.
Why This Matters for Malayalis
International City Residents: International City is home to one of the largest Malayali concentrations in Dubai. Direct metro access will transform commuting to work, schools, and healthcare across the city.
Silicon Oasis Workers: Malayali IT and tech professionals working in Dubai Silicon Oasis will benefit from seamless metro connectivity for the first time.
Construction Jobs: With 10,000+ workers deployed, the Blue Line project itself represents a significant employment pool for construction and engineering professionals.
Property Impact: RTA estimates a 25% increase in property values near Blue Line stations. Malayali property owners and investors in International City and Mirdif should take note.
