UAE School Admission Age Cut-Off Changes for 2026–27: What Dubai Parents Need to Know

Parents enrolling a young child in school for the first time in 2026–27 should check the date of birth carefully. A change to the UAE’s school admission cut-off could affect which year or grade a child is eligible to enter.

For schools whose academic year begins in August or September, the age cut-off moves to 31 December of the admission year from the 2026–27 academic year.

Previously, the cut-off was 31 August.

That extra four-month window could make a practical difference for families whose children are born between September and December.

What are the new age requirements?

For schools beginning in August or September, children must reach the required age by 31 December:

• Pre-KG / FS1: 3 years old
• KG1 / FS2: 4 years old
• KG2 / Year 1: 5 years old
• Grade 1 / Year 2: 6 years old

The Ministry also provides the equivalent stages for British, French and other international curricula.

Schools whose academic year begins in April will continue using the existing 31 March cut-off, so parents looking at Indian-curriculum and other April-start schools should not automatically apply the December date.

Does this affect children already in school?

Generally, no.

The change applies to new admissions for the 2026–27 academic year. Children who are already enrolled continue under the admission rules that applied when they originally registered.

That means parents should not assume an older child will suddenly move to another year group simply because the cut-off has changed.

What about children transferring schools?

Transfers are different from first-time admissions.

For a child moving between schools, curricula or arriving from outside the UAE, placement may depend on the last grade successfully completed and the applicable grade-equivalency rules, rather than date of birth alone.

This can be particularly important for families moving between the UAE and India, or switching between British, American, Indian and other school systems.

For families comparing different curricula, a few months in a child’s date of birth can now affect the options available for first admission.

It is therefore worth checking the rule before paying registration fees, making nursery arrangements or planning a school transfer.

Do not assume that the admission rule followed for an older sibling still applies to a younger child.

What parents should check

Before confirming a place, check:

• your child’s exact date of birth;
• whether the school starts in August/September or April;
• whether the child is a new admission or transfer student;
• the equivalent year or grade under that school’s curriculum; and
• any previous school records required for a transfer.

Where there is any doubt, ask the school to confirm the proposed grade placement in writing and cross-check it against the relevant education authority.
