Parents enrolling a young child in school for the first time during the 2026–27 academic year need to pay attention to a significant change in the UAE’s admission age rules.
For schools whose academic year begins in August or September, the age cut-off has moved to 31 December of the admission year. The change applies to new admissions and does not reclassify children who are already enrolled under earlier rules.
The age requirements
For August/September-start schools, a child must reach the required age by 31 December:
- Pre-KG / FS1: 3 years
- KG1 / FS2: 4 years
- KG2 / Year 1: 5 years
- Grade 1 / Year 2: 6 years
Schools beginning their academic year in April continue to use the 31 March cut-off under the existing system.
Who is affected?
The Ministry of Education states that the change applies to new student admissions for 2026–27. Students who are already enrolled continue under the admission rules that applied when they first registered.
For children transferring between schools or arriving from another education system, placement can also depend on the last successfully completed grade and approved equivalency procedures rather than age alone.

Many families compare British, Indian and other international curricula, sometimes while planning a move between emirates or between the UAE and India. A difference of only a few months in date of birth can affect the entry year for a child who is registering for the first time.
