More than 100,000 people have now taken part in Dubai Mallathon 2026 — and together they have recorded more than 220 million steps.
The numbers are impressive, but the idea behind them is surprisingly simple: during the hottest months of the year, turn Dubai’s air-conditioned shopping malls into places where people can walk and exercise comfortably.
The second edition of Dubai Mallathon continues until 15 September 2026, with dedicated walking and running sessions at participating locations across the city.
Why does indoor walking work so well in Dubai?
During summer, simply telling people to “exercise more” does not solve the practical problem.
Outdoor temperatures can make daytime walking uncomfortable, particularly for families, older residents and people who cannot organise their day around very early mornings or late evenings.
Shopping malls already offer something useful:
air conditioning, level walking surfaces, lighting, toilets, seating and familiar surroundings.
Mallathon takes an environment people already use and gives it another purpose.
There is no specialist equipment required and no gym membership needed.
That low barrier may be one reason participation has grown so quickly.
Where can residents join?
The current programme runs daily from 6am to 10am at participating locations including:
- Dubai Mall
- Mall of the Emirates
- City Centre Mirdif
- Dubai Festival City Mall
- City Centre Deira
- Dubai Hills Mall
- Gate Avenue at DIFC
- Ibn Battuta Mall
Participation is free and does not require advance registration. Visitors can arrive at a participating mall and collect a Mallathon wristband.
Gate Avenue joined the initiative on 1 August and Ibn Battuta Mall on 17 August, widening the network as participation grew.
The social side may matter too
Exercise is often easier to continue when it does not feel like another obligation.
Someone can walk with a spouse before breakfast, bring the children, meet friends or simply complete a few laps before the mall becomes busy.
That makes the programme as much about routine and accessibility as formal fitness.
Families do not need to compete or aim for a particular distance. Someone who normally does very little physical activity may gain more from developing a regular walking habit than from attempting an intense programme that lasts only a few days.
From 40,000 to more than 100,000 participants
The scale of the increase is also notable.
Dubai Mallathon’s 2025 edition attracted more than 40,000 participants and recorded over 120 million steps. The 2026 edition has already passed 100,000 participants and 220 million steps.
The first edition also achieved a Guinness World Records title for the largest number of runners in a mall run event, with 1,392 participants at Dubai Hills Mall.
But the more interesting measure may be whether people continue walking after Mallathon ends.
Start at your own pace
For someone who has not exercised regularly, there is no need to turn the first visit into a long-distance challenge.
Start comfortably, increase the time gradually and choose a pace that feels sustainable.
The objective is not to complete the most steps in the mall.
It is to find a form of movement that is easy enough to repeat.
MalluMetro Take
Dubai Mallathon works because it removes one of the biggest obstacles to summer exercise in the Gulf: the environment.
Instead of asking residents to work around the heat, it uses places that are already cool, accessible and familiar.
Passing 100,000 participants and 220 million steps suggests that the idea has connected with residents.
But the best result will not be the final participation number.
It will be how many people discover that something as ordinary as walking regularly can become part of their routine even after Mallathon finishes.
