The UAE is on the brink of its biggest transport transformation since the Dubai Metro launched in 2009. Etihad Rail’s passenger service is entering its final preparations, with the first phase set to connect Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Fujairah later this year. For the estimated 700,000 Malayalis living across the UAE, this changes everything about inter-emirate travel.

What’s Coming

The first phase will connect 11 cities and areas across the UAE. Stations have been confirmed at Mohamed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah, and the Al Hilal area in Fujairah, among others. Journey time from Abu Dhabi to Dubai will be approximately one hour; Abu Dhabi to Fujairah around 90 minutes.

Ten of the 13 passenger trains in the fleet have arrived and been tested to international safety standards. Each train accommodates up to 400 passengers and will operate at speeds up to 200 km/h. A future high-speed service is planned at up to 350 km/h.

Freight: Already Delivering

Etihad Rail’s freight operations, launched in February 2023, have already demonstrated the network’s capacity. In 2026 alone, the railway has transported 1.8 million tonnes of sulphur, over 4 million tonnes of aggregates, and more than 129,000 containers. The environmental impact is significant: over 340,000 truck journeys have been eliminated from UAE roads, with carbon emissions reduced by 70-80% per trip compared to road freight.

Station Experience

Media previews of the first completed station in Fujairah revealed cream-and-grey interiors, wide glass panels, clear multilingual signage, automated barriers, and cabins designed around practical comfort with generous legroom and Wi-Fi. Etihad Rail has emphasised that the experience is designed for first-time rail users, with staff on hand to assist passengers unfamiliar with train travel.

The RTA in Dubai is coordinating feeder bus and taxi services to ensure last-mile connectivity from the Etihad Rail station. By 2030, the network aims to carry 36.5 million passengers annually.

Why This Matters for Malayalis

Daily Commuters: Thousands of Malayalis commute between Abu Dhabi and Dubai for work. A one-hour train journey replaces a stressful 1.5-2 hour drive, potentially saving families both time and fuel costs.

Weekend Travel: Fujairah’s east coast beaches are a popular weekend destination for Gulf Malayalis. Rail access at 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi opens up affordable family day trips. For planning your Fujairah visit, see TripAdept’s UAE destination guides.

Job Opportunities: Rail operations, station management, customer service, and maintenance will create new employment categories in the UAE job market.
