Dubai is changing one of the most familiar parts of international travel: the immigration counter.
The General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai has launched Click & Travel, a mobile passport-control service that allows immigration officers to complete entry and departure procedures wherever passengers are located inside Dubai airport terminals.
Instead of every traveller having to reach a fixed passport-control point, an authorised officer can bring the immigration process to the passenger when operational conditions require it.
This is not a new visa-booking app
The name can easily create the wrong impression.
Click & Travel is not an app that residents use to request visa, residency or immigration services at home.
It is an airport operational system used by GDRFA officers.
The officers carry mobile devices connected securely to GDRFA databases and can verify a passenger’s identity using biometric technology before completing the required entry or departure process.
That makes the service closer to mobile passport control than a conventional customer-service appointment.
How fast is the process?
GDRFA says identity verification and transaction completion can take approximately 12 to 15 seconds through the system.
The technology is designed to help officers respond more flexibly when passenger volumes increase or when an operational situation creates pressure at conventional processing points.
That could allow airport teams to move immigration capacity towards passengers instead of relying entirely on fixed counters.
It has already handled more than 31,000 transactions
Although the public launch was announced in September, Click & Travel had already been operating on a pilot basis since May.
GDRFA says approximately 31,373 transactions were completed between the start of the pilot and 31 August 2026.
That is important because the system is not merely a technology demonstration.
It has already been used in the airport environment at meaningful scale.
Who can use it?
The current scope differs between departure and arrival.
For departures, GDRFA says Click & Travel can be used for all passengers, including:
- UAE citizens;
- UAE residents; and
- visitors.
For arrivals, the first phase currently covers UAE citizens and residents. GDRFA says the scope will be expanded gradually according to approved operational plans.
Passengers do not need to interpret this as a guaranteed alternative lane they can specifically reserve.
The system is intended to give airport immigration teams greater flexibility in deciding where and when mobile processing is useful.
Why does this matter during busy travel periods?
Airports usually manage immigration by directing passengers towards fixed processing infrastructure.
That works well most of the time.
But during major travel peaks, irregular operations or sudden passenger surges, queues can build faster than the available processing points can absorb them.
A mobile system allows trained officers to take secure immigration-processing capability directly to where passengers are waiting.
That could help reduce bottlenecks and improve passenger flow without creating another permanent counter every time demand shifts.
The technology may expand further
GDRFA says Click & Travel is being developed as part of a broader mobile-service ecosystem.
Future versions may extend beyond entry and departure processing to other services connected with the passenger journey, subject to operational and security requirements.
That is worth watching.
But readers should distinguish what exists today from what GDRFA may add later.

Dubai already has plenty of digital services.
The bigger change is that the immigration checkpoint itself can become mobile.
Instead of every traveller having to move towards the service, authorised passport-control officers can bring secure processing capability to the passenger when the airport needs it.
For now, travellers do not need to download another app or search for a booking link.
