News Update

Kollam has a new cultural event this October, with the first Ashtamudi Water Gate Music Festival bringing four more days of music and cinema to the Sree Narayana Guru Cultural Complex at Asramam.

The five-day festival opened on 7 October and continues through 11 October 2026, combining evening live performances with afternoon film screenings organised through the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy. Kerala Tourism

The event is built around the theme “Musical Ecology – Water,” linking the cultural identity of Kollam with the waterways, communities and landscapes associated with Ashtamudi. Kerala Tourism

For Gulf Malayalis visiting Kerala during the October period, it adds a different reason to spend time in Kollam beyond the usual backwater itinerary.

What is still ahead?

The festival has a different music programme at 7 PM each evening.

The opening night on 7 October featured The Manganiyar Seduction, drawing on Rajasthan’s Manganiyar musical tradition.

From 8 October, the remaining programme is:

  • 8 October — Araka Vyooham – The Percussion Band
  • 9 October — Hamsi & Band
  • 10 October — Shanka Tribe
  • 11 October — Indian Ocean

The closing performance by Indian Ocean gives the final evening particular interest. The band is known for combining Indian folk and traditional influences with contemporary fusion rock. Kerala Tourism

Cinema begins on 8 October

The festival is not limited to live music.

A parallel film programme begins on 8 October, with screenings exploring musicians, musical traditions and the relationship between music and society. The Kerala State Chalachitra Academy is organising the screenings. Kerala Tourism

The schedule is:

8 October · 2:30 PM
Amadeus (1984)

9 October · 2:30 PM
The Pianist (2002)

10 October · 2:00 PM
Journey into Sato Tadao (2025)

10 October · 4:00 PM
Autumn Sonata (1978)

11 October · 2:00 PM
Latcho Drom (1993)

11 October · 4:00 PM
Buena Vista Social Club (1999) Kerala Tourism

That makes the festival potentially useful for someone who wants to spend more than an evening at the venue: cinema occupies the afternoon, followed by live music at 7 PM.

Is entry free?

Entry to the music programmes is free, but Kerala Tourism says admission is regulated through passes. Kerala Tourism

That distinction is important.

Visitors should not assume that “free” means they can simply arrive at the venue and be guaranteed entry.

Anyone travelling specifically for a performance should check the latest official festival information for:

  • pass availability;
  • collection or registration arrangements;
  • venue access;
  • seating arrangements; and
  • any programme changes.

Kerala Tourism’s current festival page does not specify an unlimited walk-in arrangement, so confirming a pass before making a special journey is the safer option.

Why Ashtamudi?

The location is an important part of the concept.

Ashtamudi is one of Kerala’s defining backwater landscapes, shaped by lakes, waterways, islands and communities whose lives have long been connected with water.

The festival uses that identity as the starting point for a wider cultural theme rather than simply placing an unrelated concert programme in Kollam.

Kerala Tourism describes the event as an exploration of the relationship between water, human life, culture and music. Kerala Tourism

That gives the name “Water Gate” more meaning than straightforward destination branding.

It is also about activating a cultural venue

There is another interesting dimension to the festival.

The Kerala government says one purpose is to make the Sree Narayana Guru Cultural Complex a more active public cultural space, with continuing programmes rather than allowing the venue to remain underused. Onmanorama

The festival forms part of the state government’s 100-day action programme, with the Cultural Affairs Department working alongside Tourism and other public institutions. Kerala e-Governance

So the longer-term question is not simply whether this five-day event attracts an audience.

It is whether the complex develops into a venue that regularly hosts music, cinema and other cultural programmes after the festival ends.

Why this may interest Gulf Malayalis visiting Kerala

Kollam is usually promoted to visitors through its backwaters, houseboats and Ashtamudi Lake.

A festival like this adds another layer.

A traveller already visiting southern Kerala between 8 and 11 October could combine a daytime Kollam or Ashtamudi visit with a film screening and evening concert rather than treating the city only as a transit point or backwater stop.

It is a small example of how cultural programming can give familiar destinations new reasons for repeat visits.

MalluMetro Take

The strongest idea behind the Ashtamudi Water Gate Music Festival is not simply that Kollam has another concert series.

It is the attempt to connect place, music, cinema and public space.

A backwater destination does not have to be experienced only through a boat ride.

By bringing Rajasthan’s folk traditions, percussion, contemporary world music, Indian fusion rock and international cinema into the same five-day programme, the festival offers another way to experience Kollam’s cultural landscape.

For anyone in Kerala this week, the practical dates still ahead are:

8–11 October · afternoon cinema · live music at 7 PM · Sree Narayana Guru Cultural Complex, Asramam, Kollam.
