Flying home for Onam can be one of the happiest trips of the year — and one of the easiest to overcomplicate. A little planning before leaving the Gulf can save hours of stress after landing.
Before the flight
- Recheck passport and visa validity rather than assuming.
- Confirm baggage allowance for every sector of the ticket.
- Carry essential medicines in suitable packaging and keep prescriptions where required.
- Share arrival details with the person arranging pickup.
- Check weather and road conditions close to travel day.
Plan around the festival calendar
Kerala Tourism’s Onam Tourism Week runs from 24 to 30 August, with Thiruvonam on 26 August, Pulikali on 29 August and Aranmula Vallamkali on 30 August. If you want to attend public events, do not leave transport and accommodation decisions until the morning of the programme.
Remember the return journey
The flight back to the Gulf deserves the same attention as the outward trip. School reopening, work resumption and road congestion can turn a relaxed holiday into a stressful final day if the schedule is too tight.
MalluMetro Take
Onam travel should feel like going home, not managing a project plan. The best preparation is the kind that disappears once the holiday starts: documents checked, pickup arranged, medicines packed and important festival dates saved.
