With Etihad Rail’s passenger service about to connect Abu Dhabi to Fujairah in just 90 minutes, the east coast is becoming the Gulf’s most accessible weekend escape. For Malayali families in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Fujairah offers a change of scenery that feels worlds apart from the urban desert landscape.
Getting There: Currently a 90-minute drive from Dubai via the E88 highway. Once Etihad Rail passenger services launch, Abu Dhabi residents will reach Fujairah in approximately 90 minutes by train. From Dubai, the drive remains the fastest option until the Blue Line opens in 2029.
Beaches: Dibba and Sandy Beach are the most popular for families. The water is noticeably different from the Gulf coast, with clearer visibility and marine life. Snorkelling at Snoopy Island (off Sandy Beach Hotel) is a highlight for children and adults alike.
Malayali Food: Fujairah city has a growing number of Kerala restaurants serving authentic Malabar cuisine. Friday afternoon is the best time for fresh fish at the Fujairah Fish Market, where prices are significantly lower than Dubai.
Budget: A weekend trip for a family of four (hotel, meals, activities) typically costs AED 800-1,200, roughly half the cost of a comparable hotel weekend in Dubai.
