It’s Official: Etihad Rail Passenger Trains Launch June 30 — Abu Dhabi to Fujairah in Under Two Hours

Mark the date. June 30, 2026. The UAE gets its first passenger railway service.

Etihad Rail has confirmed that passenger trains will begin operating between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah on the 30th, with journey times of approximately one hour and 45 minutes. This is not a trial run or a soft launch. This is revenue service, open to the public, tickets available.

For the hundreds of thousands of Malayalis living in Abu Dhabi, this changes the weekend equation overnight. Fujairah’s east coast beaches, previously a 90-minute drive through mountain roads, are now accessible by train. No petrol costs, no Salik, no highway fatigue. Sit down, connect to Wi-Fi, arrive relaxed.

The broader network will eventually connect all seven emirates, with Abu Dhabi to Dubai expected in roughly one hour. That service is still in preparation, but the Fujairah launch proves the infrastructure works and the trains are ready.

For Malayali commuters who currently drive between Abu Dhabi and Dubai daily, the train cannot come soon enough. The E11 highway commute, which eats 3-4 hours of every working day, is the single biggest quality-of-life complaint among Gulf Malayalis. When the Abu Dhabi-Dubai service launches, it will be transformative.

Ticket pricing has not been officially announced as of this writing, but expectations based on regional benchmarks suggest fares will be competitive with fuel costs for the same journey. First and economy class options will be available.

We have been tracking Etihad Rail in our Infrastructure Live Updates series since January. This is the milestone we have been waiting for. The UAE’s rail era begins on June 30.
