Thiruvonam may fall on one date, but for Malayalis living abroad, Onam rarely ends there.

Work schedules, school calendars, weekends and venue availability often stretch the celebration across several weeks.

That is exactly what is happening in Germany this year, where Malayali communities in Cologne and Frankfurt are preparing major Onam gatherings after Kerala’s main Thiruvonam day.

Cologne: Shravanapulari on 29 August

Cologne Kerala Samajam is preparing its “Shravanapulari” Onam celebration for Saturday, 29 August 2026 at the St. Germanus Church Auditorium in Wesseling.

The announced programme begins at 3:30 pm, with entry from 3:00 pm.

The celebration is expected to bring together a wide range of Kerala traditions, including:

  • Thiruvathira
  • a traditional welcome for Mahabali
  • Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam
  • folk and group dances
  • chenda melam
  • Pulikali
  • Onasadya
  • games and community activities

The organisers have also invited German friends and second-generation Malayalis to participate, making the programme about more than recreating a festival only for people who already know it.

Frankfurt celebrates on 5 September

Kerala Samajam Frankfurt’s Onam celebration has been announced for Saturday, 5 September 2026, at Saalbau Bornheim in Frankfurt.

The programme is reported to begin at 11:30 am with Onasadya.

Children from the Samajam’s Malayalam School are expected to take part alongside other performers, with a programme including a short Onam-themed play, Thiruvathira, classical and group dances, Onam songs and other community activities.

That Malayalam School connection is particularly meaningful.

Kerala Samajam Frankfurt says its school has operated since 1970, helping younger generations learn Malayalam while remaining connected with Kerala’s culture and traditions. The organisation also describes its wider role as supporting newcomers, students and families integrating into life in Germany.

Why community Onam matters abroad

A family can celebrate Onam at home.

But a community gathering creates something different.

Children see hundreds of other people wearing traditional clothes. They hear Malayalam outside their own home. They watch dances their parents may have spoken about. They sit down for sadya with people from different generations.

For someone newly arrived in Germany, the same event can also provide something more practical:

a community.

That is one reason Kerala Samajams and other diaspora organisations remain relevant even when families are thousands of kilometres from Kerala.

Onam changes when it travels

Diaspora celebrations rarely follow Kerala’s calendar perfectly.

A community may celebrate before Thiruvonam, the following weekend or even several weeks later.

That does not necessarily weaken the tradition.

It shows how Onam adapts to the realities of life abroad.

A community hall in Frankfurt or Cologne may look nothing like a Kerala courtyard, but the pookalam, sadya, music and people gathering around them can still carry the same sense of belonging.

Check before travelling

Because these are community events, readers should confirm the latest registration requirements, venue, timing and any participation fee directly with the organisers before travelling.

This is particularly important for Frankfurt, because the organisation’s current website does not yet display the 5 September programme in its upcoming-events section, even though the event has been reported by community media.

MalluMetro Take

Onam abroad is not simply an attempt to recreate Kerala for one afternoon.

At its best, it does something more important.

It gives children a connection to culture, newcomers a community, older generations somewhere to pass on memories, and non-Malayali friends an invitation to understand what the festival means.

Kerala may be thousands of kilometres away, but when people gather around a pookalam and sit together for sadya, Onam has a way of making the distance feel smaller.
