By Mallu Metro Infrastructure Desk | June 2026
This monthly digest covers infrastructure developments across Kerala and the Gulf that haven’t yet earned their own dedicated tracker series but are worth following. As projects reach critical milestones, they may be promoted to standalone tracker posts in future editions.
Kochi Water Metro: Phase 2 Fully Operational
The Kochi Water Metro continues to perform as one of India’s most innovative urban transit systems. Phase 2 expansion is fully commissioned, covering almost all intended island routes connecting various islands to the Kochi mainland. The system boasts high ridership and operational profitability, serving as a global model for sustainable water-based urban transport. International delegations regularly visit to study the model.
K-Rail (SilverLine): Under Review
The most politically charged infrastructure project in Kerala remains in limbo. The incoming UDF government has signalled a complete environmental and financial audit of the 529 km semi-high speed rail corridor that was the previous LDF government’s flagship project. Industry observers widely expect the project to be either heavily modified or shelved in favour of conventional railway line quadrupling. This is a space to watch, but actual construction is unlikely to resume in the near term.
Dubai Metro Gold Line: Approved
In April 2026, Dubai approved the Metro Gold Line, its largest sustainable transport project to date. The 42 km, fully underground line will feature 18 stations. Combined with the Blue Line (covered in our dedicated tracker), Dubai’s metro network is entering an ambitious expansion phase. The Gold Line will particularly benefit residents in emerging southern Dubai communities. We will launch a dedicated Gold Line tracker once construction timelines are confirmed.
Vizhinjam Rail Connectivity
Land acquisition for the 10.7 km railway line connecting Vizhinjam Port to the national rail network is progressing. This rail link is critical for unlocking the port’s full EXIM cargo potential. The current reliance on road transport through an interim access road limits throughput. Completion of the rail link will allow bulk cargo movement and significantly boost the port’s competitive position against Colombo and Singapore.
Kerala Airport Expansions
Both Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode airports are undergoing capacity upgrades to handle growing passenger volumes, particularly on Gulf routes. These expansions, while less headline-grabbing than mega-projects, directly impact the travel experience for the diaspora community flying home. We will provide detailed updates as expansion phases reach completion milestones.
