The pathway: Pass the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) CBT test, secure a job offer from an NHS trust or approved healthcare employer, obtain an English language qualification (IELTS or OET — most Kerala graduates pass OET more comfortably), apply for a Health and Care Worker visa. The visa is significantly cheaper than standard work visas and includes a fast-track processing option.
The reality check: Starting salaries for Band 5 nurses (the entry level for overseas recruits) are approximately GBP 28,000-29,000 per year. After tax and living expenses, the savings potential depends heavily on where you are posted. London is expensive but has the most positions. Cities like Birmingham, Manchester, and Leicester offer better cost-of-living ratios and have established Malayali communities.
What they do not tell you in the brochure: The first winter is brutal, both physically and emotionally. The clinical environment is different from Indian hospitals in ways that take adjustment. Night shifts, understaffing, and administrative burden are real challenges that NHS nurses face daily. Going in with realistic expectations is better than arriving with a fantasy.
