Pulikali, Kerala’s famous Tiger Dance, is listed by Kerala Tourism for 29 August 2026 at Swaraj Round, Thrissur. Performers paint their bodies in elaborate tiger patterns and dance to traditional percussion, creating one of the festival season’s most recognisable public spectacles.
It takes far more work than the performance suggests
The body painting and preparation can take hours. Troupes train, musicians rehearse and artists transform ordinary bodies into exaggerated tigers and hunters. The result is playful, but the craft behind it is serious.
Why Pulikali travels so well online
For Malayalis abroad, Pulikali has become one of those traditions experienced through photographs and videos almost in real time. That visibility is useful, but it can reduce the event to colourful imagery.
The better way to understand it is as a living folk-art tradition rooted in Thrissur’s public culture — one that still depends on local troupes, musicians, organisers and large crowds.
